Certified Constitutional Scholars: Students Shine at We the People State Invitational
On February 4, 2023, students from 7 high schools around Nevada met in person for the first in-person We the People State Invitational since 2020. Our host institution, the College of Southern Nevada, Cheyanne Campus graciously allowed our students to use classrooms and the June Whitley Center. The students met with the eighteen judges (each unit has a three-judge panel) to discuss constitutional questions.
A We the People Hearing consists of a 4-minute prepared statement (in response to a question developed by the Center for Civic Education) and then a 10-minute follow-up question & answer session with the judging panel.
As the judges were moving from one room to the next, they were often overheard saying “wow, these students are amazing!” or “I am so impressed by their depth of knowledge!”, and of course the best compliment to our students, “I am certain these students will make a huge impact on our world!”.
We are so excited to announce that Reed High School will be representing Nevada at the National Contest in Washington DC this April. Reno High School has also been offered a Wildcard Slot for the Contest and we could not be more proud that these two incredible teams will represent the Silver State.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the High School We the People program this year.
