Reno High School Teacher, Richard Clark, shares his background in history education and his passion for sharing the importance of civic engagement with his students.

Richard Clark was born and raised in Reno, attended Little Flower for eight years, and graduated from Bishop Manogue in 1998. After graduating from Nevada in December of 2002 with a degree in Secondary Education, he began teaching at Reno High School in both US History and Life Science. He was then hired to teach United States Government, Student Leadership, and Alternative Education Science. He is now eighteen years into his career in which he has taught United States Government, United States History, Alternative Education Science, Student Leadership, Freshman Seminar, and for the last fourteen years Advanced Placement Government, and We the People. He has coached football for 15 years and has been the Social Studies Department Leader for the last ten years. His passion for history and politics motivated him to pursue his Masters of Art in Teaching History from Nevada in 2009 and earn his National Board Certification Teaching certificate in 2011. Since starting the We the People class in 2007, his students have earned five District Championships, six State Championships and earned eight trips to the National Finals. In 2020, they finished sixth in the Nation.

What brought you to NVCCE?

They adopted me. I have been teaching WTP for 14 years and have been working with the NVCCE as it transitioned from the Nevada Bar Associations Law Related Education Committee.

What do you love most about the work you do with our civic engagement programs?

Watching my students grow and flourish under the WTP curriculum while preparing for the district, state and National competitions.

What is your vision of NVCCE in the future?

To continue to support teachers and students with civic education.
