Emily Cruz,

Program Assistant

Civic Engagement is important because…

tmuch more than the literal act of participating in our democracy. Civic engagement is the empathy which comes alongside every act of participation, every registration, every vote, and every advocation for democracy. Civic engagement is the empathy we all must hold and actively partake in so we can advocate not just for our own self interests, but for the interests of those who cannot advocate for themselves. Civic engagement is not always working to create a better democracy for us to experience today, but creating a democracy suitable for our children, and their children, and their own.

  • Emily Cruz is an NVCCE Student Intern and part of our We The People Alumni Engagement Team. She is a pre-med student majoring in Biochemistry at UNLV and is working toward creating meaningful political impact in my local community. As an aspiring medical student, Emily is very passionate about healthcare legislation, and aims to promote voter registration, literacy, and civic engagement to create a medically responsible and sustainable atmosphere in Nevada. When not working with NVCCE or as a Student Ambassador for When We All Vote: My School Votes, Emily volunteers in the hospital to further her knowledge on neonatology and genetic research!

the responsibility we have to our country and government to be involved with the way our community and country are run.

  • Ashley is a recent graduate and We the People Alumni. After mentoring our summer institute teachers, she knew she wanted to keep making an impact. When I'm not studying politics or reading great books, I am training in martial arts or lifting weights.

Ashley is a second-degree black belt in mixed martial arts and loves being outdoors, hiking, or fishing.

While she begins her college years at the University of Nevada with a double major in political science and finance, she will also be serving NVCCE as a Program Assistant supporting several special projects.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
