Our Programs

History Day is an exciting way to study history and learn about issues, ideas, people, and events that interest students. History Day lets students express what they have learned through creative and original performances, media documentaries, papers, or three-dimensional exhibits.

  • An inquiry-based learning program that supports disciplinary skills in the classroom as well as student choice and voice.  The program provides classroom teachers with an effective vehicle for teaching the content of history (and other subjects, such as art, theater, and media) and the basic components of critical thinking and other disciplinary skills. It helps students develop the skills to think critically about schoolwork and the many decisions they must confront as citizens.

Students complete the project by showcasing their knowledge of the topic they’ve researched.

History Day can be taught in an online, blended, or in person classroom.

Project Community is an interdisciplinary curricular program for middle, secondary, and youth organizations that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy.

  • Students work cooperatively to identify a public policy problem in their community. They then research the problem, evaluate alternative solutions, develop their own solution in the form of a public policy, and create a political action plan to enlist local or state authorities to adopt their proposed policy. Participants develop a portfolio of their work and present their project in a public hearing showcase before a panel of civic-minded community members. Many student groups involved in the program actually take the next step of direct civic engagement by contacting appropriate public officials and attempting to influence them to adopt their policy proposal.

Project Citizen can be taught in an online, blended, or in person classroom.

Law Day is held on May 1st every year to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession.  You can read more about the history of Law Day and past themes here. Past themes include anniversaries of the I Have a Dream speech, the Miranda Law, and the Magna Carta.

  • Attorneys and Law educators community members are often invited into classrooms throughout Nevada the week before and the week after Law Day.  The American Bar Association (ABA) chooses a different theme each year to promote knowledge, history, and current events.

The We the People program and curriculum is an innovative course of instruction on the history and principles of the United States constitutional democratic republic. Engage elementary, middle, and high school students using The We the People print textbooks and enhanced ebooks' interactive strategies, relevant content, and the simulated congressional hearing, making teaching and learning exciting for both students and teachers.

  • The We the People program’s culminating activity is a simulated congressional hearing in which students “testify” before a panel of judges acting as members of Congress. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues. Teachers may engage their students in a noncompetitive simulated congressional hearing or a competitive hearing at some levels in certain states.

We the People can be taught in an online, blended, or in person classroom.

Programs to support Inquiry-Based Learning

Virtual Speaker & Field Trip Series

Engage in Civil Discourse through a virtual field trip with experts and artifacts in History and Civics. Increase your own content knowledge or support your We the People, Project Citizen, or History Day Project with our monthly online series.

Professional Learning Communities

We offer Professional Development in all our Civic Engagement programs.

Nevada is a large state in geography and population, and for many years, connecting colleagues across the state has proven difficult. But technology has allowed us to do just that. We are so excited to see the connections made, resources shared, and ideas that will be generated.

Student Bootcamp

Work with We the People judges, coaches, and teachers to prepare for the Nevada District Invitational. Students will have opportunities to engage with a We the People Judges panel and learn more about presentation skills and how to break down the hearing questions. Students will also be invited to work with We the People Coaches in their own unit.
