We the People: 2024 State High School Invitational
200+ High School seniors from nine schools across the State of Nevada competed in the annual We the People High School State Invitational on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the University of Nevada, Reno. With an on-campus partnership with the Office of President Sandoval, students engaged with panels of judges through Simulated Congressional Hearings. The hearings focused on topics such as: How would you account for the origins of political parties, and how have they impacted the checks and balances embedded in the U.S. Constitution? and To what extent, if any, did the Voting Rights Act of 1965 reshape the landscape of American democracy?
Teams qualified after a December regional invitational: Canyon Springs High School, Faith Lutheran High School, Galena High School, Incline High School, Edward C. Reed High School, Reno High School, Robert McQueen High School, Southwest Career and Technical Academy, and West Career and Technical Academy.

The We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Program promotes civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s upper elementary and secondary students. The We the People program encourages student-led, inquiry-based interactive strategies, relevant content, and simulated congressional hearings, making teaching and learning exciting for both students and teachers. The We the People curriculum is an innovative course of instruction on the history and principles of the United States constitutional democratic republic. The Nevada Center for Civic Engagement (NVCCE) is home to We the People, National History Day, Project Citizen, and Law Day in Nevada. NVCCE’s mission is to open the door to democracy by supporting teachers, empowering students, and engaging the community for a more educated Nevada. Their programs encourage critical thinking, confidence, active listening, and taking informed action through research, writing, communication, and presentation.
