Meet the People: Lauren E. Hayes
Lauren Hayes teaches 7th and 8th grade Social Studies at Doral Academy Northern Nevada. She first connected with the NVCCE when attending her first Nevada Social Studies Conference. Since then she has been utilizing its resources in her classroom. Hayes uses her diverse personal, professional and educational backgrounds as the cornerstones of her approach to teaching. She earned her Associate of Arts degree at Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, her Bachelor of Arts degree at Portland State University, and her Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Sierra Nevada College. Hayes’ studies, combined with a love of travel, a passion for language and culture, and a dedication to mindful global citizenship make her a well-rounded educator.

Hayes lives in Midtown-Reno with her partner Ryan, and her pet bunny Alice. In her spare time she paints, practices yoga, and visits the Pacific Coast whenever she can. She took time out from her busy workload and many hobbies to discuss the importance of civic engagement.

What brought you to NVCCE?
I was drawn to NVCCE because of the incredible forum available and the authentic passion that each person involved has for civic engagement.
What do you love most about the work you do with our civic engagement programs?
I love the opportunity to collaborate across the state, and sometimes the nation, with other educators and professionals who are all passionate about citizenship, history and how we can continually grow together.
What is your vision of NVCCE in the future?
I would love to see NVCCE develop opportunities for teachers to collaborate between schools, to give students more exposure to different perspectives and educators. It would be a great adventure to have a switch up day/unit or team-teach with We the People!
